If you were born 100-years ago in some small country village, the basic tools used for putting food on the table might have been a forge if you were a blacksmith, a mud scraper if you were a potter, or the Bible if you were a clergyman. But, the beauty of the time is that it flies. With every passing second, the tools and methods around us evolve.
As much as I like the past, I love to live in the present and today I’m going to share with you some of the devices and gadgets that have had a huge impact on the history of human civilization.
The first such device I will highlight was the British Bombe, designed by Alan Turing. The British Bombe is an electro-mechanical device which was used by British cryptologists to help decipher German Enigma-machine-encrypted secret messages during World War II. Just to put things into perspective, this device was life changing–it shortened World War II by 2 years.
Moving on, the second device worth the mention is the Apollo Guidance Computer(AGC), the device that helped humans to get to the moon.
“One small step for man one giant leap for mankind”- Neil Armstrong. These words give me chills whenever I come across them; if you are familiar with these words, then you are already aware of how humans got to the moon.
The AGC had approximately 64Kb of memory and operated at 0.043MHz. Don’t worry, I won’t geek you out with numbers, but just to elucidate, the first generation iphone has 2000 times more memory than the AGC. That’s how far we have evolved.
The final set of device that I would like to highlight are the handheld devices which comprised of the mobile devices, tablets, etc. Man, these devices makes our lives way too easy. From booking tickets to finding your true love, any and everything one imagines is made possible.
Let me stop beating around the bush and come to the real conclusion. You must be wondering, why am I appraising you with all this information now? When you are still in that country village, sitting on your cozy couch, sipping something to quench your thirst, thinking about what else you can do. All I want to say is, these tools/gadgets, if used in the right directions with the right mindset, can become the real building blocks for a better and sustainable future for the generations. With these and many more such devices, you can really change or steer what is to come next.
